Dock spiders are one of the largest arachnids in Canada, growing up to 9 centimetres across! They love to hang out under docks and wait for their prey. They’ve been known to even eat tadpoles and minnows! A neat trick because not many invertebrates can capture and eat a vertebrate!

Dock spiders have amazing legs. They can use them to distinguish a leaf from prey based on vibrations. Their bodies and legs are covered with dense water-repelling hairs that help them stay afloat. They can even walk on water and jump vertically to avoid being eaten by fish! These spiders can also hide underwater for brief periods! While you may be startled by these large spiders, please remember that dock spiders are harmless to people. They actually try to avoid us since we are much more dangerous to them than they are to us.
